  1. 1723-1792. English portrait painter, active
  2. in London from 1752. He became the first
  3. president of the Royal Academy 1768. His
  4. portraits display a facility for striking and
  5. characterful compositions in a consciously
  6. grand manner. He often borrowed classical
  7. poses, for example Mrs Siddons as the Tragic
  8. Muse 1784 (San Marino, California, USA).
  9. Reynolds was apprenticed to the portrait
  10. painter Thomas Hudson (1701- 79). From 1743
  11. he practised in Plymouth and London and
  12. 1749-52 completed his studies in Rome and
  13. Venice, concentrating on the antique and the
  14. High Renaissance masters. After his return to
  15. London he became the leading portraitist of
  16. his day with pictures such as Admiral Keppel
  17. 1753-54 (National Maritime Museum, London).
  18. His Discourses on Art 1769-91 contain his
  19. theories on the aims of academic art.
